Field

Field of Hope…

Since the moment of our creation, we were called to till and keep the earth. We were entrusted to be gardeners and protectors, and we still are, starting with the garden within.

The field is the place of opportunity, where good things can grow. The field is the place where we do the work to sow, nurture, water, and harvest. Where we put all our hopes.

Are we living with awareness of the deep, meaningful work that is happening in the field of our soul? God, the creator, the sower, the gardener, the vinedresser, is always at work.

Is our soul exposed path, rocky ground, a field of thorns, or are we actively cultivating good soil?

“Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it had not much soil, and immediately it sprang up since it had no depth of soil; and when the sun rose it was scorched, and since it had no root it withered away. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. And other seeds fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.”

Mark 4: 3-8

A green, lush, blooming field is always a wonder to behold. It’s a sign of abundance. It fills the human heart with gratitude for the bounty of creation and the love of God.

Our hearts can also be bountiful fields. Whatever we plant in them becomes the source of our spiritual nourishment.

As Christians, we have access to the best nourishment in the form of the Word of God, the Sacred Scriptures, the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, the example of His first disciples, the Apostles, and the good news they spread to the ends of the earth.

As Catholics, we have the inspiring faith, hope, and charity of the Blessed Mother, the courage and conviction of the Early Church Fathers, the Martyrs, and the Saints.

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy, he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”

Matthew 13:44
