How a Catholic Knows

Topic: Scripture and The Church.

(Guest Post)

First

We start by treating the Gospels as historical documents. Read that way, they show a man who claimed to be God, rose from the dead, and founded a Church with real authority:

You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church… whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven…

Matthew 16:18-19

Second

That Church is called “the pillar and foundation of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15). Christ promised it (that Church) that the Spirit would “guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13).

Third

That same Church, guided by the Spirit, discerned which writings were inspired. Councils at Rome, Hippo, and Carthage in the late 300s set the canon. Trent later defined it dogmatically.

Saint Augustine said:

I would not believe in the Gospel, had not the authority of the Catholic Church moved me.

Scripture and the Church were never rivals. The Church spread the Gospel, wrote down the New Testament, preserved it, and told the world which books belonged. As Paul said:

Hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.

2 Thessalonians 2:15

So if you trust the Church’s judgment on which 27 books make up the New Testament and that Scripture is inspired, why stop trusting it there?
